After recent update, no login

Hi, since a recent Windows update on my WinXP I come as far as Windows logo and then it restarts. No protected modus. I can contact all Winxp folders through my Linux O.S. Is there a way I can delete updates through Linux (Ubuntu)?. I already had SP2 but no SP3, there were approx. 25 updates. Any help much appreciated.

Can you boot into safe mode? might give you enough access to see what's going wrong; alternatively the only thing I can think of would be to run a Windows repair from the install disk.

Safe mode just restarts computer and no restore option on cd, it can't find Win installation
