I have a wireless router. One compter connects through it by ethernet cable. One connects via wireless. I have tried to create a home network so that I can share files between the two but must be doing something wrong. Box 1 (connected by wire to router) is running XP SP2, the wireless one is running XP SP1.
Suggest you start over. Reset the router to it's factory settings. There should be a button on the back, possibly reset, and if you press that, it will go to the default settings including log on and password. This should be in the manual or on line at the mfg website Follow the set up instructions precisely. Once it's set up run the Set up the Home network wizard on the machine that's hardwired. Once you have an Internet connection run the Wireless Wizard on the other computer
Upgrading to SP2 on old box. I will try that and if it doesn't work I will reconfigure router. Do I need to set the router up as a "gateway" to do this?

All the set ups should be done during installation. SP2 might solve the problem
Router is set up. Computer 1 is connected to router by cord. IT has net access. Computer 2 is setup. It has wireless connection to internet. Then I:
Ran Network setup wizard on computer 1. Chose "my computer connects directl to the internet or through a residential gateway'. Enabled file sharing. Diasabled firewall.
Ran networkseting wizard on computer 2. Same settings. Same network name.
On one box (wireless) under network places I can see both boxes. If I click on the other it says I don't have access and may need to contact an admin.
On the other, I can only seethat box. I am gettinng frustrated!
If the firewalls are disabled, make sure the Groupname on both computers are identical. I put in a uniques Groupname, i.e., I don't use the default Microsoft name. Unfortunately, getting the computers to recognize and share data is a common problem and a pain in the a$$ to fix
