When it opens, it's fine. Then on the desk top it's sideways. Thanks for any help.

What's your video card make? What's the program?

If you mean the whole desktop:

nvidia: right-click empty desktop, nvidia control panel, display, rotate screen, no rotation like so:

ati: right-click empty desktop, catalyst control center, displays manager, rotation = 0 degree like so:
