Many people were surprised recently when the ThermalTake Big Typhoon 120VX came out on top of their 25 cpu cooler roundup at hexus (see here:
http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=8757 ) but I think a big part of this was down to the case selection & more specifically the location of extraction fans around the cpu.
I would also say that case fan orientation can have a bigger impact with the TT Big Typhoon 120VX (I have 1) than some other coolers as the CPU HSF blows down onto the HS & mobo instead of straight out the back as is the case with the thermalright, noctua, scythe ninja etc.
I use a Antec P182 with my 120VX which has both top & rear mounted extraction fans near the cpu. In practice this means that the cpu fan blows cool air down through the HS and then the 2 extraction fans pull the hot air away from the mobo & out the top and back of the case making it very efficient at exhausting the hot air.
I can only imagine that having the antec 900's 200mm fan in top in place of the 120mm that's in my P182 only improves this further.
For those interested my TT 120VX on a e6420, Asus p5n-e with all fans set to low (inc cpu) keeps my cpu @32C idle, 37C load not bad considering it's also nearly silent . Increasing the fan speed to medium pulls the idle temp down to 25-26C.
The right case/fans & more importantly orientation of those fans can have a BIG impact upon cpu cooler efficiency!
Does anyone else have the TT 120VX in a different case? I'd be interested to see what temps other people are getting with different cases.
