Disk Defragmenter

Whenever I open the Disk Defragmenter, it look and performs normal at first but during the defragment process, the "Defragmenting..." would change to "Analyzing Disk..." then would proceed to the window with the "Defragment Now" button. What could possibly have gone wrong with this component/application? and how would I be able to make it work?

It analyzes first, and is asking for confirmation to go ahead and defragment.
