Here is the background. HP desktop. Win Vista Home Prem SP1 32bit. Updated HP BIOS. Utilizing HP provided Recovery Disk.
Replaced original 320GB 7200rpm HD with 160GB 10,000rpm HD (wanted faster disk).
Ran the 2 HP provided recovery disks and then machine asked me to reboot. When rebooted got this error msg:
"The instruction at 0x76f52f6b referenced memory at 0x73bd9b04. The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of 0xc000026e. Click OK to terminate the program"
Did search on this error code. Found from MS Windows Error code doc that the error msg means
"An operation was attempted to a volume after it was dismounted
STATUS_VOLUME_DISMOUNTED"
Looking at MSDN it states
"Specified Volume is no longer mounted"
Another item in MSDN stated that this msg is tied to
"FSCTL_IS_VOLUME_DIRTY Reply "
Seeing this I ran Startup diagnostics. Diagnostics said RAM, HD was ok.
when I reboot it states
"BOOTMGR is missing
Press Alt+Ctl+Del to restart"
I'm at loss as to what could be causing this problem.
Before anyone suggests contacting HP support, this PC is OUT OF WARRANTY.
Any ideas what could be the cause or any workaround?
