Sorry if this is a re-post. I did a basic search and did not find any info on this.
I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop which has Win 2000 on it. I want to upgrade this to XP-Pro but the only problem is the CD-Rom is broken. BIOS does not allow booting from USB device, so external CD-Rom is not an option.
In this case can I plug the hard drive into another laoptop (I don't have desktop) and boot from the XP CD, and after the windows files are copied and before the reboot occurs for other configuaration can I plug the hard drive back into the old laptop? Will this work?
Any Info on other options (within my limitations) to upgrade would be greatly appreciated.
The other Toshiba laptop's CD-Rom does not match with the broken one.
I bought a same model CD-Rom from ebay but the laptop would not recognise it. BIOS would give a 'IDR #1 Error' while booting, this is a common problem with Toshiba laptops. I guess toshiba did this for forcing everybody to use their expensive replacement parts ($225 for CD-Rom).
You can move the HD to the other laptop to install windows. However, if there is enough hardware change, your original laptop won't boot off the HD. This when most would do a repair on the install to fix that. However, that also requires booting off the OS disc.
After I copy the ISO into the desktop do I need USB or CD-Rom support. As mentioned earlier my laptop does not support USB and I have never done upgrade earlier so dont know if CD-Rom is required once the upgrade setup is run.
