Hello!
I just wanted to ask a rookie question about wireless networking. So I have this old 1GHz PC that I am using for internet only. The point is that the internet comes through PPPOE over Ethernet. My idea is to put a wireless adapter on the PC so as to be able to route the internet towards my laptop. Is that possible and what is the cheapest equipment I could buy to acheive that purpose. What I am interested in is what range does a standard wireless adapter cover (considering walls and all). Moreover, the PC with the internet is in a room that is in the farthest end of the house, so the living room is like 2 rooms away. Is this a serious impediment? Please help...

The easiest way would be to get a wireless router, saw a Trendnet on newegg for around $30. The distance shouldn't be a problem unless you live in a mansion or have brick/concrete walls.
