Ok - this has bugged me for some time. I was getting mysterious BSOD after a while of running my PC. I tracked this down to the defrag utility provoking it. I surmised that a dodgy file was on the disk. I turned to Piriform's Defraggler tool which did the same thing, but showed me it was trying to access wmvcore.dll at the time.

This was the version in c:\Windows\system32\dllcache. I subsequently tried deleting or renaming this file, but the crash was repeated, so I cannot alter this file manually. I noticed that the Defraggler tool was showing it was reading the last sector of the SATA disk (as well as another sector), so I wondered if there is either a problem with a bad sector on the disk or the driver is dodgy.

I'm not sure what the best (safest) approach is to remove this file (given it's a Windows system file) or mark the sector on the disk as bad.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried running chkdsk /f?

Yes, chkdsk also causes bsod. I tried in safe mode too.

Executing chkdsk /f normally displays "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)"

Do you get a BSOD when you execute chkdsk /f or when you reboot and it actually verifies the disk?

Yes this happens when a schedule chkdsk is running.

You can try a windows repair. You should be able to extract the file off your OS disc and overwrite the existing one.
