I'm mainly interested in hearing from anyone who's tried overclocking the Xpertvision 8500GT Sonic gddr3 card. But any other 8500GT's would be useful as well.
I have been tinkering with mine for a few days now and have got some stellar results and I'm wondering if this is close to the norm or I just got lucky.
I'm debating whether to get another to SLI but if this ends up a golden sample i may lose alot of my current overclock so make it less worthwhile.
Some stats:
stock: 600 core 1200 mem - 50c idle 60c load
oc: 650 core 1320 mem - 50c idle 62c load
Still haven't reach the point where any crashes or artifacts, kind of like the current illusion of no ceiling
Yeah always a problem Deus. As it happened i pushed it a little further. It appears to be ok (ran CoH benchmark) but need to stress it a bit more.
So final Results (as of writing)
700 Core 1400 mem
I decided to push to 700 because i seen one factory overclocked card at that level which made me think it might be possible. That is a ridiculoua overclock from what nvidia reference is for this silicon 450 core if i remember correct.
and you got to figure thats just manufactures overclock.... G86 series is terrible for DX10 game even some DX9 games but it sure is a hell of an overclocker.
I was initially using CoH as my benchmarking tool and overall got a very healthy increase i now run it 32fps 1024X768 All high except shadows on medium and model detail on the second from last notch oh and 8X CSAA.
I have just started using 3DMark06 unfortuately i forgot the the result will redo at some point.
66c isn't bad at all compared to my last one. It had been fine until i changed to the p180 case then with the lack of side intakes it showed how hot it could get 82c at one point. :?
Try running COH again but this time set everything to High(not ULTRA just High) even shadows and put model detail on full. Take of that 8xCSAA and put it to x2 or off. (make sure you set AF to x2/x4 in Nvidia control panel)
32Fps is not bad considering tis only a 8500GT.....
The shadows are a no go on this card they cost a fortune in fps, 15 to be exact, only saved 5 fps going from 8xCSAA to 2xAA on the lower model detail and shadows. The high models with 2xAA was 36 fps
Not bad really, i'm eager to see if sli helps. I hope google keep up their offer until ebuyer get more stock :?
Flexo with the overclock it can start to get relative close to the 7600 GS, going by some random review i looked at but the settings where slightly different so hard to tell. Out of the box 7600 GS all the way probably though.
I'm going to try some high res bench's late after work because I want to get an idea of what kind of performance i'll get i've i switch to 1680x1040 when i get a widescreen monitor. This should also allow a better comparison to the 7600 GS review.

that will be great.
its just that im stuck between this or a 7600gs. they both cost the roundabout the same price which is £43. just wanna get the best value for money
Just to clarify a few points flexo before u start taking anything I post about this card as advice on what to buy wouldn't want u coming after me or anything demand recompence for a wasted £43
This is the XpertVision Sonic which i think is marketed as an overclocking card and comes pre overclocked to 600 mhz and has GDDR3, most are GDDR2. They have probably done some mods to it themselves to allow such headroom so expect different mileage from other manufacturers especially if its an non overclocked card. I had read a review of some vanilla 8500gt that would go no where.
It has great temps though which is always helpful.
Oh and the reason i got it for 43 was the google checkout offer 53 normally which still about the cheapest 8500 and strangely only one of a few that come with GDDR3
Just as another note flexo, mind my knowledge of the 7 series isn't complete, but if the 7600gs is the same price and overclocks well (if ur in to that) then u'd probably be best going there for raw performance. But there is one thing to note about the 8500 and thats image quality it seems noticeably better to me coming from the 6 series. I think this is down to nvidia implement some more accurate filtering or something, which is documented some where, so i assume its better than the 7 series as well
You will have to forgot about dx10 with either card anyway u'll be getting alot more by running the dx9 version of whatever dx10 game on any card below £175 ie u need 8800 or 2900 if u want dx10 in the immediate future.
No real answer there I know but some food for thought for you at least.
theres where ill be getting it from ebuyer. was talking to nolan and was told that all 7600gs, 85/8600gt should be in stock for end of this week. plus they got 200 xpertvision one coming in or so ive been told. should get it before the google offer finishes.
im not intrested in dx10 as i doubt any of the 8500 or 8600 will be able to play it properly. just want most performance for the money and sorry if i jacked ur thread
Hey no problem. Helpfully actually because i was wondering about the 8500 stock levels, they sold out like hot cakes last week. I may just get another to try in sli when they do come in. £86 for a new graphic system aint to bad if the new one goes like this. I'll probably regret it though in a few months time :?
i know what u mean. been looking for a graphics card for a month to complete my system. thought there would be some good offers on like x1600 for £26 but nothing comes up, now my exams are nearly over wanna finish of my first build
