Acer 8730 volume slider control does not work

Acer Aspire 8730
The Volume slider on the right side of the keyboard (media controls) doesn't work (never has). I can turn up the volume with the control in the system tray. Is there something I am missing? Acer tech support said I need to use my system disk and restore my hard drive back to factory settings. I would have to reload all my programs. Is there a way to avoid this and get the volume slider to work?

Install the hot Key button support you will get the drivers from the Acer website which can ne found on www.google.com
