Hi.

I have a brandnew ACER emachine laptop. But when I tried to install
an OS (Windows XP) the installer will stop because the OS detected
a harddisk problem due to unproper shutdown. The error message also
said that I need to do a check disk on the harddisk. How can I perform
a check disk when I don't have a Windows OS on my laptop? My laptop
comes with a Linux OS. I already tried fsck on the harddisk and
it went ok, but when I tried to install again the Windows OS, I still
encounter the same error message.

Anyone knows how to solve this?

Thanks,
Jerry

Are you planning on running both operating systems in a dual boot or are your intentions to replace the Linux with the Windows OP/SYS?

If your intentions are to run the Windows OP/SYS period you'll need to discover the brand of the HDD in the laptop, go to the HDDs website and acquire the HDDs diagnostics disk, use the disk to Low Level Format, or Zero Fill, or Drive Wipe, whatever the utility that completely erases the HDD for your brand HDD.

Then the installation will work because all past data and boot records will be gone from the HDD, Win XP doesn't know what to do with the Linux Partition, so it will need to be removed.

If your intentions are to dual boot between the 2 operating systems you'll need a partition managing software like Partition Magic to create a bootable partition for the WinXP OP/SYS to be installed on, and a boot manager to handle the two different operating systems.
