1. I cant find any benchmarks comparing these 2 procs.
2. From the newegg/AMD specs the ONLY difference i can see is:
a. The FX-60 has HT= 2000Mhz
b. The Opty 185 has HT= 1000MHZ
3. This is the gear Ill be using:
ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce SPP 100 ATX mobo

BFG Tech BFGR7950512GTOCE GeForce 7950GT 512MB GDDR3 PCI
Express x16 OC Video Card

Corsair XMS TWINX2048 PC4000PT RAM

4. So....what does the HT mean to ME? I Game, I dont Multitask.
5. The only reason I ask is that it almost impossible to get an FX-60, which
WAS my 1st choice.

any help will be appreciated

ty for the prompt response....

I'd still like to know in like Fear (fps) numbers, exactly how much the ONLY 1000MHZ HT will hurt me....Ive already decided that if MY local comp guy cant get an FX-60 that I will get the 185.....but I'd still like to know in some common reference where I'm gonna suffer the most aka bottle neck etc.

I'm still on an Nforce 2 ASUS board so until this upgrade, I never needed to worry about HT : )

P.S. btw in an old Maximum PC magazine THG was mentioned....in the strangest 'successful' cooling design ever thought up......

A PC enclosure fill with cooking oil....I gotta hand it to you guys...I WAS tempted...but the hardware store was all out of epoxy resin :)

Ahhh . . .

The FX-60 has an unlocked multiplier. I guess it was AMD's way of bidding a fond farewell to s939.

From an investment standpoint over time I would guess that it would maintain a greater percentage of its current cost - just my opinion.

In a few years a young mad scientist with more money than sense may want to buy it from you to clock 5000MHz on liquid nitrogen or somethin' - lol

These days I don't see how you can beat a 165-170 Opty for price/performance/OC simplicity . . .

It's been my understanding, since I just researched this and bought the 185 as well ($200+ on Newegg) that the Opty has virtualization technology and that the 1000mhz HT is actually the same as the FX-60. Rather than list it for both cores they just listed it the HT speed for one core. It's all confusing, it's just AMD pulling more marketing tactics bullshit. Kind of like the FX-53 (now going for about a grand I believe, is the same as the $60 4000+ They discountinued the low-end FX's in favor of promoting new ones, in order to raise prices and speeds and whatnot. If you ask me, we're all kind of stupid for paying hundreds of bucks for some silicon and chipboard, but what do I know? Is it any surprise that Intel is rich as all hell? These computer tech companies are ALL crafty. Marketing itself is a billion dollar business. Selling eskimos ice is an CRAFT/ART and we're all suckers I guess, myself included. Think about it...this crap comes from CHINA and TAIWAN. When has anything to ever come out of China cost more than a buck? It should go without saying that tech companies are based in California, which is OBVIOUSLY known for it's shady business ways. Let's see...porn capital of world, computing, tv infomercials... Oh, and guess where that new fat burning miracle pill your girlfriend is on comes from. California!

Oh, and nothing against Cali...I love hot women, mountains, and mild weather. It's the business (Enron anyone?, there's a direct link between Enron, Bush and oil) the politics (as just mentioned), and of course the stupid drunk party people/raves/drugs/pamper your dog and be an in-your-face homo crap that bugs me. It's not EVERYONE in Cali, as I have friends there...

I'm also not a real fan of fakeness. If you have ugly-as-a-dog genetics, you should just not reproduce! I don't like a phoney, you can't fool me!

Yeah, they're the same. It's just like saying the C2D has a 266FSB or 1066FSB....marketing BS, as you said.

Get which ever one is cheaper, and if the price is identical I'd go with the Opteron 185 as it's a higher binned chip; the FX60's unlocked multiplier isn't going to help it overclock much.

thx Johhny I was HOPING that was the case....Thats why I was looking for benchmarks FX-60 vs 185 Opty....to make SURE that was the case. When i saw the specs i figured that:

1. newegg made a typo...or....
2. amd changed the L1 or L2 architechture (giving each core its own L2 cache
or something, as opposed to the FX-60 maybe 'sharing" the L2 cache as in
both CPU's the L2 cache is 2mb (2x1Mb)

unless my comp guy pries an FX-60 outta sum1's cold dead fingers...it looks like I'm going the Opty route anyways :)

Not a problem. The Opty 185 is probably BETTER than the FX-60. What I read was that one guy called AMD to find out for sure and they told him the Opty goes through more tests at the plant. I also read that Opterons are hand picked wafers (server class) and that they have better potential to OC higher and that they run cooler. Not to mention those stupid FX-60's are a lot more expensive online. As one guy put it "Opty 185 is the holy grail of 939." I'm glad to own one now. NewEgg's prices lately have been the lowest I've seen and I tend to scour Froogle.com, Pricegrabber, and the best priced reliable online stores for good prices constantly.
