New hard drive w/ new windows 7 install

I want to replace my C drive with a new WD 640. Can I disconnect my existing C drive - 3 years of XP and 1000s of files; install new WD drive; format and do new install of W7. Question: when I reconnect old C drive, will W7 have access to all those old files? Seems like a simple way to clean install W7 - start with a NEW drive.

  1. You may have to go to Control Panel/Adminstrative Tools/Computer Management/Disk Management and assign the drive a drive letter.
  2. yes you will be able to access your files - just not your programs. Make sure in your BIOS you tell your system to boot from the drive with Windows 7 installed.
