I have an HP a1640n desktop. i was cleaning out the heatsink one day and scratched the mobo with a screwdriver. then i replaced the mobo with an almost exact copy ( only difference being the new one doesnot have onboard video). then the power supply went bad. after replacing the power supply i tried to start the computer back up. then i got some blue screens. so i reformat the hard drive and attempt to install a new OS on the computer - XP pro.

I am trying to install windows XP pro on a computer that used to have XP home on it. i have removed the hard drive and moved it to another computer - reformated the drive and replaced it in the computer.

during "Windows Setup" it will load everything. then say setup is starting windows - or something to that effect. and then i will get a blue screen

"a problem as been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
check for ciruses on your computer. remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. check your hard drive to make sure it is properly confiured and terminated. Run chkdsk /f to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer.

technical information

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xf78d2524, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)"

i have ran the "Smart" hard drive check and it says passed with zero errors.

i dont know what to do.
hlp plz plz plz

thanks

-Joe

PS: i find it Ironic that the blue screen error says "if you get this error again run chkdsk" kinda hard to run something that requires windows if i cant get the OS to start...

You can run the chkdsk through the repair console.

1)Make the optical drive the first boot device
2)insert OS disc
3)restart
4)press any key when prompted
5)choose the 'r' option to repair current install
6)choose partition and press 'enter' for admin pass(probably isn't a pass)
7)at command prompt, use 'chkdsk /p' command

It looks like it's going to start the install process.

Here are good step by step instructions.
