I have not joined the hdtv game yet because there is so little hd available in
my area- two ota (local nbc and pbs) and little on cable (which I despise
anyway- so much poor quality sd transmissions). I'm wondering id there is a
way to receive hdtv using on of the old big sat dishes? Not sure how they
work, but I don't want compressed hd over cable or small dish. Anyone have any
info on this? Is it a feasible solution? TIA

I don't imagine the size of the dish indicates the quality of the HD. Also,
as I understand it there is more HD available on DBS than there is on 4DTV
big dish. Heck, local NBC in HD would be enough to get me to buy a new HD
set!

I see no difference in HDTV picture quality as sent by Directv
compared
to over the air reception. (I get both) For $10.99 extra a month
you get HDnet, HDnet movies,
ESPN-HD, Discovery-HD, Universal Pictures HD, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox.
Both HBO and Showtime come with HD if you subscribe to them.
For new subscribers you can get the triple LNA dish and the HD
decoder
for $299 installation included with 3 free months of HD programming.

Agree, I get both also.
With HDTV, the biggest difference in quality among broadcasts is the quality
of original content. Some HDTV is spectacular, some is poorer than good DVD
quality.

You will not find any HD network feeds with big dish

Not true, although to decode the signals, one does need a HD MPEG2-DVB receiver
attached as a slave to the IRD. CBS and PBS HD are possible this way.
The problems are:
1) The analog and VCII signals that BUDs receive are not HD.
2) The DCII signals are for the majority, SD, although there are a handful of
HD signals. (Those are your "4DTV" signals).
3) Most MPEG2-DVB boxes have NTSC outputs ONLY.
4) Some HD signals are in proprietary formats.
