I had a power failure, and many of the desktop icons and program icons in start-all programs have vanished. When I click on Outlook express i can send and receive e-mails, but Internet Explorer and Firefox cannot gain access to the internet.

I ran chkdsk /f and that did not solve the problem. Is this a file system error or registry error. I bought System Mechanic to try to fix the registry, but I can't gain access to the internet to register the software. I am using my laptop.

Can anyone help me? thank you!

there are 2 ways to fix this,the easy way is restore the computer to a day previous to the power failure, the longer way is if you have the XP installation disk do a repair, both work equally well, but the restore takes less than 5 min and the repair takes a hour or so
