Has anyone else noticed that CBS (at least here in LA) is broadcasting
their digital 4:3 content with grey pillar bars now instead of black?

Yes. And WCBS out of New York has been doing it for some time. I wonder if
this is a coming fad for CBS?
No other Los Angeles digital station does it though, and I'm glad.

It's to appease the owners of plasma screens. One of their engineers
suggested I use a stretch mode to eliminate the pillars on my LCD projector.
My thoughts are that it is the plasma owners who ought to be using stretch.
Why penalize the rest of us who have LCD, DLP, etc.? In a darkened home
theater room, those bars are really obnoxious.

This DishNetwork 811 receiver has the option of adding grey bars. Perhaps
we'll have to ask manufacturers to add the option of black bars as well, so
viewers can counter the grey bars added during broadcast.

I find the grey bars rather obnoxious, but the other day I was wondering how
long it'll be before they start putting some ads on them.

Whats the diference between the black bars and the grey ones? I was
told one of them helps reduce burn in and the other makes it worse.
Which one is which?
