You were trying to fix the icon.....Were you trying to change the icon's picture or repair the connection?

If you're simply trying to repair your connection, you can try it again. It's not hurting anything. If it still doesn't work, unplug and plug in the internet cable/adapter. This will also reset your connection.

the connection icon is not showing in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. I recently had to change the hard drive and loaded xp and nothing else. I can connect to the internet but nothing shows as to the status. Thanks

right click in the taskbar area near the clock-->customize notifications-->find your network connection and change the behavior to always show.
