Two things jump out.

1. You are paying way to much for RAM, Plenty of good stuff out there for 1/3 the price.

2. You will have driver support issues with Vista 64 bit.

Oh yeah, change out that IDE DVD for a SATA.

Everything looks good. Ditch the ram and get some that are better and cheaper. Oh, and if I were you I would wait for the price drop.

Good calls haywood.

ditch the Vista 64 bit, most of your games wont work correctly.
stick with vista 32bit or XP Pro

If you go to 32bit vista or XP, at least a gig of that ram is going to be wasted. You should make sure you really need it, or just start with 2gb.

The 8800 GTX does fit in the P180 case but you will need to leave a bay free or move some hard drives around.

Get XP Pro, you'll get better behavior in games than with Vista.

Check your PSU, see how many amps it offers. The 8800 GTX and the quad are both power hungry. I think you'll be fine, but I'm not sure.

This is a good choice for ram:
Crucial

Also, get Vista 32-bit instead of 64-bit or even XP Pro. Couple of reasons for that. You plan on getting an 8800 GTX. You will not see a Direct X 10 benefit by getting XP Pro. Also, just like XP was when it was first released, the problems with Vista will be worked out soon enough.

Is the pc8500 ram overkill, I do plan on OC'ing a bit?
what exactly is the advantage for q6600 vs e6600, does it help with multitasking or gaming?

Not so much, for now. Maybe in a couple of years most games will be able to work better on quads, but we're not there yet. Get the Q6600 only if you do any of these:

- video encoding and editing
- CAD
- programming
- run an antivirus and some downloads and watch a movie and play a game or type in a forum, at the same time (don't laugh, I do that a lot, like now for example)
- want to impress girls with your expensive CPU :p
- run a server of some sort (file, Web, DB)

yeah I plan on having two monitors one with maybe a movie and the other with a game on it, so Im thinking I might need it. Thanks for the quick reply, what about the ram is that overkill or should I stick with ddr2 800? I dont plan on upgrading for about 4 years.

I'd better let the experts answer this one. My guess is that it is overkill indeed, if you only intend to overclock "a bit". I'd get some quality DDR2-800 (Crucial Ballistix, for example).

Another thing: some mobos only support up to DDR2-800. You better check for compatibility before buying the mobo and the RAM. It would suck to get expensive RAM and have it not work, wouldn't it

Would go with this HD, Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS (Perpendicular Recording Technology) 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148140

Would also go with ram with the D9 chops on them like this one. Mushkin eXtreme Performance 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146108

But otherwise, specs for new computer build looks solid, but you might want to check and see if your PSU can give you the wattage you need for that graphic card. Good Luck on your build.

dont know how well running a movie on one and a game on the other will work. running a game taxes the computer to the max, movie might be choppy and im not sure if software DVD players are coded to utilize more than one cpu.

but if it works then you are a master multi tasker!

If you're set on a quad core, wait till the price drop. Otherwise just get an E6420 or E6600 or something.

As mentioned, get a Sony/NEC Optiarc SATA DVD writer.

2GB of D9 chip DDR800 RAM is fine. Someone linked some Mushkin that should do the trick. Crucial Ballistix is also guaranteed D9.

If you're buying the OS then I guess Vista 32 is the one to go for. Might be more hassle than XP until SP1 comes out, but it's more 'future proof' obviously.

Pretty sure you should be ok with a 650W Truepower Trio.
