using Win Vista Home Prem SP2. the file is in the System32 directory in the folder "Macromed" but i'm apparently not allowed to delete it?
when i attempt to the system asks me to confirm, and then tells me i cant delete it because the file is open in another program. i have rebooted a few times and get the same error. have also rummaged through Task Manager Processes and see nothing related to Adobe or Macromedia or Flash or even this file name that would ring a bell for me to kill off.
i've also used CCleaner to remove a related entry from the Registry ... but cant delete this friggin file.
i've even gone all command-line and tried to regsvr32 /u the little bugger but Vista politely declines to honor my request with "The module 'FlashUtil9e.exe' was loaded but the entry-point DllUnregisterServer was not found." and also "Make sure that 'FlashUtil9e.exe' is a valid DLL or OCX file and try again."
so, fine, the regsvr32 /u doesnt work.
i've also tried changing the attributes of the file with attrib -A -R -S -H FlashUtil9e.exe to no avail. just get a terse Access Denied message there.
my original mission was to completely clear out all the various versions of Adobe Macromedia junk hanging around then reinstall only the most recent versions of Flash and Shockwave and Reader cleanly ... and really want to delete what i thought was a useless file but now am feeling a bit at a loss as how to remove it.
If you are certain you want to delete the file, there are a few free utilities that will either unlock the file in use or delete before the operating system loads and a process locks it in.
i tried the EMCO MoveOnBoot product first and while it would rename and move the file, never did get a successful delete out of it.
the Unlocker product, on the other hand, worked like a charm. FlashUtil9e.exe was successfully removed!
i was then also able to delete the corresponding 'Macromed' directory as well.
i rebooted a few times to make sure the file and the folders were really staying gone ... and they did.
then reinstalled Shockwave, Reader and ... when i installed the updated version of Flash the 'Macromed' directory returned with a new file named 'NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe' which is fine by me. it has a much newer date stamp and i'm more confident its a useful file.
thanks again for your reply and your success recommendation!
