Is this a decent OC for air cooling based off of all your experiences? What type of Life expectancy drop might this cause? This is what is roughly the equivelant of the soon to be released QX6850. Thanks.

Its barely pushing your cpu :) Quite mild and sensible overclock.
I cannot see how you could do any damage, unless your seriously overvolting (1.5v) which is not required to hit 3Ghz. Keep your load temps
under 60, and enjoy its speed. Or get water cooling and push for more:)

I have a Q6600 at 3.3Ghz, at 1.4v, its water cooled though still i reckon
its achievable on air too.

i agree, its dependant on the amount of voltage you pump into the cpu. but a 400mhz OC is nothing for this core architexture. you probably wouldnt have to change anything to reach 3ghz except the FSB.

life expectancy is hard to determine because each chip is different, but i would venture to say running it at 3ghz will show little to no difference in life expectancy. heat and voltage are what you want to stay away from.

what are your reasons for going with teh qx6850 over the qx6700?

I do not plan on changing CPUs. I was merely noting the similarities at those speeds. I almost hit 3Ghz with my E6600 on air but it was unstable. I had to leave it at 2.8-2.9Ghz. My temps run 40c -/+.

e6600 will run 3.25-3.6 on air fine

1450 - 1480 fsb is easy with 9x and 1.3-1.475v

Asus 650i it will run 3.37ghz fine with a stock intel cooler at 1.475v reads 1.41 on probeII with a p5n-e sli

ddr 800 ram should be tuned for 2.13- 2.178v , try skill 4-4-4-5 at 4-4-4-8 875, muskin 4-4-3-10 at 900, or super talent 4-4-3-10 at 3-3-3-8 at 750mhz

975x chipset 1.42v will get you 3.4-3.5ghz
