So I got a 320 gig ide hard drive at one point in time. I had no need for it since I have 2x250 gig sata hard drives. Also I have cd drives that I use every once in a while. However, I had managed to almost fill up my 2 hard drives, so I want to hook up this IDE hard drive to backup a lot of my crap that I don't use every day. When I plugged it in windows wouldn't boot, the windows boot screen just freezes on the first or second frame (it's dim and the green bar isn't there yet). When I look at it in the bios the hard drive registers as what it should be. When I get the "windows did not boot properly" it counts down normally, but if I choose to boot windows it will freeze and not do anything. Is this a problem with the hard drive or is it an incompatibility with my motherboard. I'm just assuming it's not a hardware problem with the motherboard because my cd drives work fine as far as I know.

Make sure the sata is set to boot first.

Make sure your BIOS is set up to recognize both the ATA and SATA drives then make sure that the drive with the OS is the only in the boot sequence the only other drives should be your optical drive and floppy
