I went to the "change settings" area for windows update but the area under "important updates" where it would let me turn it off is grayed out. At the top it says some stuff about having administrator access, but I'm the only user on this laptop. Anyone have any tips?

Right click, and select "Run as Administrator", after this try again. Or start the PC in safe mode and try.

Also, try stop the service: execute this command: sc stop wuauserv or en services.msc, windows update.
