Someone go to maingear.com and buy a desktop with the 1GB GDDR4 version of the video card and benchmark it.

Take one for the team people! Actually your're gonna have to take a couple thousand since you have to build the entire system from them.

Here are some 3DMark benches, (I know, I know), but still ...

HD2900XT 1GB

... let the battle finally begin.

Or is the 8900 lurking in the shadows?

Hopefully this means that the video card scene isn't going to so boring as it has been lately.

Ok, those benches look good enough, though the price is a bit high. Now if only the new motherboards and cpus can come out, I can build a new computer.

Those are good scores but looking at ORB they are not any better than 2900's with 512mb of ddr3 at similar clocks and overclocked quad cores.

The thing to keep in mind is that with 3dmark06 quad cores bring about an extra 1000 points to the final score and the one in that test is clocked at 4000.
When Dailytech tested the preproduction 1gigddr4 card back in April it didn't do any better than the regular 2900 and I'm sceptical if that has changed. The higher clocks can be achieved without the extra expense.
