I put some files on my memory stick and all seemed well..but when I tried to access them at my friend.s they were all rows of x and z's ...gobbldygook...we are both on windows XP...any advice most welcome please.

Simple answer is you created and saved the files using an application your friend doesn't have...

You need to use the same or a compatible program to open the file on your friends computer. If that's not an option, you can also use a file format converter.
