hi all,
i am quite new to all this, so i need your help
i have a 512kbps/1024 kbps connection broadband cable connection.
The modem is thomson TCM420, and it doesnt have a inbuilt router.
I use utorrent (p2p) software alot, infact its the primary software i need the net for, and it seems it is blocked, i cant seem to get good speeds on it. and i tried everything, from reinstalling winxp, to modifying the utorrent settings and azureus as well.
I get excellent speeds while downloading other files from the web, but when it comes to utorrent or azureus, the speed limps.
Does that mean i need a router to forward ports?
My neighbours have the same connection as mine, and they have a touchstone arris cable modem, and no router, but they get excellent speeds on the utorrent.
Do i need a router? or do i need to talk to my ISP people? My isp people dont respond too much, so is there anyway else out? Should i change the modem? or just get an additional router to forward ports?

thanks,
monica

Offhand I'd say no, you don't need one.

Does utorrent work at all? If not, could be a firewall issue on the PC. If it does, but the speeds suck, then it's a utorrent issue and not a routing issue.

just use the port checker in utorrent to see if the port is open. If it is then it might just be a poorly seeded file. I would only expect a download speed of about 100-200 kbs given your connection stats. That's a pretty slow connection for cable.

1. ports are not open
2. speeds keep fluctuating alot in utorrent
3. i get a speed of 10-15 kbps on utorrent
4. i tried bitcomet and azureus as well, the same result, not much speed.
5. when i download regular files from the net, i get a speed of 50-60 kbps
6. i tried manipulating utorrent in every way, and it still gets crappy speeds.
7. before, i was sharing a connection with my neighbours and had a dlink router, and everything worked fine, i used to get great speeds on utorrent.
8. now we both have seperate connections, and separate modems, and i guess thats why i asked if i needed a router to forward ports.
9. i think i have NAT problems,. i cant solve

10. when i had the router, i used the DMZ mode, and it used to work fine.

Yeah without a proper port forward you will never get full speed

Reply to brw02005

so i should supplement my modem with a router?
any specific ones i should be looking for?
The DMZ mode is mighty handy

DMZ is used to put one computer outside of the router. I suggest you portforward it manually since you will not lose the NAT firewall that way (in plain english it's more secure). If you only have one computer connected to your router you should be able to port forward properly. Mine only messes up when I have two.

i dont have a router, i cannot forward ports.
i was asking if i need one.
i found out that my ip address was shared : http://www.homenethelp.com/sharing [...] ddress.asp
so i asked for a new one. i am not sure if it solved my problems, i will come to know about it in a day or two.
i still wonder if i need a router.
