i have an e machines t2542 that im helping a friend work on ( well re install xp)and i couldnt get it to install right so i made a big mistake and added a slave hd to it and installed there,so it had 2 copys of xp one on the master( that had a lot of errors) and the good copy on the slave.from the slave i used swissknife to format the master drive (a very big mistake on my part) as soon as i restared the system the computer said that it couldnt find the os.ive switched the cables and jumpers on the drives, gotten a couple of ultimate boot discs, even tried to use my retail copy of xp sp3, and when the system gets past bios, it starts whatever disc ive put in and as soon as it starts to run the program it just shuts down ( the whole computer turns off) ive tried to clear the cmos, use this boot disc that has a bunch of utilities for the hardware (mainboard, hard drives, etc )after you make a selection the computer seems to know that your meddling and turns off. I tried to repair ntldr that didnt work either, nothing ive tried has worked the closest ive came to anything is with this try this first thing i downloaded it got me to a f8 kinda thing, the safe mode options,i tried to start safe mode and i got this error <windows root> \system 32\ntoskrnl.exe im lost e machines doesnt offer the recovery disc any more and this is a little beyond my scope if anyone has any ideas please dont hesitate to message me.

thanks,solomon.

you can try removing the master and make the slave the master(jumpers)see if that wil get it to boot, if it doesn't, remove the slave and reformat the master HDD, whichever you decide to use, then make sure the netldr file is not there or the XP will not install, I use the Ultimate Boot CD, and wipe the drive, but do the install with only one drive in the computer, good luck

I second the Ultimate Boot CD 4 Win , but you should have no problem booting from the Windows Install disk and using its integrated portioning tools to Delete and crate new partitions on the drives, those noling the problem there, make sure that you Full Format though as Quick Format only wipes the Disks Records the files themselves stay there to be over written.
