No encryption? If you want to do that, it's your neck but that's a big no no. Enable some form of encryption, at least WEP or preferably WPA. I apologize for being n my soapbox, but you do know that anyone can get on your wireless right? And if someone started getting on your wireless connection and using your internet connection, you would potentially be responsible if they are doing illegal activities? Because your whole wireless network resides behind your router. When you connect to your ISP, they only see your router which looks like a computer to their systems. All the other machines on your network get everything through your router, but the only address they see is that router. If some yahoo is out in your driveway and starts getting on kiddie porn through your internet connection, it will look like it's you doing it even you may never have touched the stuff. Just so you know.....It's the best way to be safe. And if I yelled at you or anything, I'm sorry.
Now I'll get off my soapbox. Anyway it sounds like your router might be configured to use WEP, but it's not configured right on your PC. Or that your not entering a correct password or something of that nature. What might be easiest is to get out your cd that came with the router, and just reset your whole network fresh. Then when you do that, enable some type of encryption on your network, WPA is good WPA2 is better. But WEP would be better than nothing.
my main computer which the router (dlink 524) is connected to uses windows xp while the computer that receives the signal uses vista. I tried setting the encryption to both WEP and WPA, and both did not improve my signal strength (yes, I am aware that they are just encryptions) I even tried adjusting channels. Still made no difference in the signal strength. The computers are approximately around 30 feet away from each other. There are two walls between them. One is a normal wall and the other is a glass wall. I even replaced the antenna of the router to 5dbi. It made no difference in the signal. I usually get 60% to 80%. What can I do to get stable connection? Could my 2.4ghz computer remote controller be interfering with the signal connection? I even made a homemade wireless receiver called windsurfer and attached it to my receiver but that resulted in an even more amount of intermittent signal disconnection while it did improve the signal strength to 100%. PLease help.
Could be the remote. Because if memory serves, the G standard runs at 2.4 ghz. Check the specs, but you may consider the newer N standard. It's faster, and I think it runs at 5 ghz which if you switched to that, it MIGHT help you b/c you would probably eliminate interference from your controller and other devices.
