I have a Thermalright Ultra-120 as my cpu cooler. Was wondering if I placed a 4cm fan as in the picture below:

Would it help to lower the CPU temps? And also, I was thinking of using masking tape to tape up the sides of the Ultra-120 so that the airflow generated by the fan will be concentrated directly into the heatsink, not allowing the air to flow wherever it wanted; kinda like creating a tunnel for the air to pass through. IF I did that, would it also help improve my temps?
Thanks and best regards 8)

i really doubt that'll help much, even so it may only be 1 or 2 degree at most.

because:

1. you are placing a fan on the plate, it'll hinder the performance of the fan because the base is solid so it doesn't have the strength to pull the air, in addition it'll also interrupt heat dissipation because its so awkwardly placed (not much but it'll definitely block some)

2. even if you get it to blow air at its rated air flow u are only blowing against one fin of the heatsink, so its pretty much useless, not to mention its a 4 cm fan

3. its a 4cm fan lol

if you REEEAAALLY want to use that fan then try mounting on the side fins of the ultra like the 120mm fan, use pull configuration (pull air)

AND DO NOT TAPE THE SIDES, u want the heat to dissipate all around the heat sink not only to one side.

You could also try putting a small heatsink/fan combination right where you pictured it (like an older northbridge fan)... It may mess up the way the larger heatsink works; but you'll never know until you try. Heatsinks/fans like that can be found at Microcenter for like $5 - $10 if you have one of those near you.

1. Mount the fan using standoffs.

2. I'm pretty sure the point of this is to remove heat from the heat spreader, not to enhance the fin cooling.

3. Digi-Key part number GC054008VH-8.

theres so little room in there... it aint gonna do much

by all means try it if you don't believe me, its gonna be tough placing it there.

Both of those ideas could potentially decrease efficiency... do it and find out. The easy way to make it work better would be to get a higher CFMs with a more powerful fan.

place it so that the fan pushes air through the fins, that's how all the really good HSF are set up. the fins are the surface area that allows for quicker dissipation of heat.

Sorry for not making myself clear, I meant using the 4cm fan to flow downwards towards the base of the heatsink, not the bottom fin :D

Hope this illustration helps

The 4cm fan draws some air flow that the 12cm fan generates and then blows towards the base. Would it cool the base better?

Once I get back home I'll try it out and post some results :D

I don't forsee a huge difference, but that may still give you noticeable added cooling. If you do it I would love to see the results to see how much it effects your cooling. One thing I would like to add though is that it would be better if you can give some room between the fan and Heatsink contact so the air has a place to keep moving.
