Very low sound volumn

I am using vista with a xonar DX 7.1 sound card and 5.1 speakers. One day all was well, the next I had to max out every volume control in the entire system to hear any sound. We have uninsulated everything in that system's reconfigured the speakers and checked 100 other items to no avail. What's next?

did you try using the sound from the mobo?
isolate things...
if sound from the mobo works, then it may be your soundcards preamp died
