When I try and copy a disk, I get the message no drive is detected

I'm assuming you're trying to copy a disc (cd/dvd) and not a hard disk.

Check in my computer to see if your optical drive is showing up. If it isn't, check your cables. If they are secure, check disk management or the device manager to see if it shows up in either place.
