Hello,
OK, I see that I'm way behind times--Is there a FREE download for opening new (new to me) file extensions? How can I, if it's even possible, find out which file extensions I can open with my current computer software/driver/?? (I don't even know what it is called)? AND, why all these new file extensions?

There is no such tools to open different applications. All extensions are linked to different applications and you would need different applications to open each one of them.

^^This website would help you out as to which extension belongs to which application group.
