I'm working on a ASUS F5V laptop. The system had some problems, it has to be returned to the manufacturer on an RMA, and they re-installed Windows XP Pro circa December 2007. When I got the machine back it needed many Windows updates. The first was SP3, then there were 41 OS updates, and 9 hardware and other updates.

The install process got to #46 of 50, KB951847 (Updated for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5). That was about 10PM last night. The screen had not moved for an hour at that point. When I awoke at 6AM, the same screen remained. I canceled the install, it reported immediately that cancellation was taking place, and then it stopped. No indication it was rolling back the updates.

Any suggestions?

Having waited over an hour for the screen to update, I held my breath and forced power down. Then I ran Windows update again, this time unchecking KB951847. The update completed for all items selected.

Next I ran the update again and 2 items remain - KB928366 and the above KB951847. Install of KB928366 failed, and KB951847 completed. Running it yet again, KB928366 failed again.

Currently searching for anyone who has posted this issue.

ok, I got this resolved. What a pain.

I found an article that recommended uninstalling all .NET versions, and re-installing. It goes on to detail additional procedures which I did not bother with - simply removing and re-installing (over many steps) each version of .NET eventually resulted in the system becoming fully up to date.

Just awful...
