I am building my first system and I have run into an issue. So far, all I have connected to the motherboard is: cpu w/heatsink and fan, case fan, front panel lights and front panel power switch, and ram.
When I turn it on, nothing happens. Fans don't move, lights don't light, etc. I tried to reseat the 4 pin cpu power and the 24 pin power cables. It was then I noticed something odd about the 24 pin power cable.
In the picture, look at the 5th pin on the top, counting from the right. It doesn't have the gold lining like the other pins do. Is this ok or is this a product defect?
I had the same problem too on my first build. I just unplugged everything and replugged it. You have a lose cable somewhere. I reinserted (tighten) the quad-core heat fan and I think that was really it. Some cables were plugged in wrong also. And follow the mobo manuel as close as possible.
This may seem really obvious/dumb, but alot of cases have two power switches. An actual switch on the back of the case, near the top; plus the normal button/switch on the front of the case. When I completed my first build, I was so excited, the switch on the back totally slipped my mind.
Try reversing the power/switch plug that runs from the case's power-on button to the motherboard. Just rotate it 180 degrees. If the ground wire isn't aligned properly, the power-on button will not work. Just a thought...
Thanks to all who responsed.
What I have done now:
I removed all connections from the motherboard.
I removed the heat sink/fan from the cpu, removed thermal paste, then reapplied it again (incase I had put too much on previously). I plugged the power back in to the motherboard. Plugged in all fans. Plugged my front switchs. Put memory back in.
Now I turn on the power (in the back), then hit the power button on the front and ...
The power light on the front lit very briefly, then went out. None of the fans turned on. When I tried to turn the power on again, the light did not turn on.
So, it looks like I got power, however briefly.
But something caused it to shut off quickly.
Can anyone suggest something I could check? Or something I can do?
I had the same problem with my first build round 3 years ago --- my problem was that I didn't connect the power on and the reset wires to the right place on the mobo --- double and triple check these
ps. i forget what ones I had reversed but it would boot if I held in the Power button, though you might not what to try that as it may cause damage, but it didn't on mine
I had a similar issue when i built my first system. I found out quite quickly from help from a friend that i had forgotten to put in the standoff's. In hindsight now that i understand more it is such an obvious error, but it was really that simple. The motherboard sitting directly on your case backing will kill it. Good luck.
My case is an Antec Sonata II.
My motherboard is Gigabyte ga-965p-ds3.
I had plugged the case fan into a power connector and also into the fan control on the motherboard. Apparently this is a no-no because I when I unplugged it from the fan control on the motherboard (but kept it plugged into the power connector) all of the fans started running and my lights on the front of my case came on. Yee ha!
Now I just need to plug in the other stuff (hard drives, etc) and I will be cooking with gas!
Thanks again to each person who responded. I really appreciated your help.
