I have a n external Hard Drive that has a 40 GB disk in it, that I want to useas a backup; but whenI tried to format it adialog box came up with words "Cannot format your disk is write-protected; deal with the WP then try again. Trouble is I've looked all over the Internet and haven't found anyone that knows what to do. Is the problem XP or is it the Disk. B Grimsell

It's likely the permissions on the files.

right click on the files on the disk go to properties and at the bottom select unblock or make sure that they are not protected
