Back a few months ago I built a new system and I was going to use IDE drives that I had already bought. It was pointed out to me that I should use SATA drives and after discuessing it for a while I gave in and bought 2 500GB Maxtor SATA drives and a Motherboard that supported SATA drives Asus PB5

To make a long sorry short I had all kinds of problems getting the system to see both drives, if anyone does a search on my user name you'll see all the post back then.

NOW.... all of a sudden after the system working fine for about 2 months last night I was working and opened Yahoo Messenger and then clicked on my status to change it to available and boom! I got the first blue screen of death I have EVER got while using Win XP. I was a fool and didn't read the whole thing and just pressed any key to continue and all I could get was
Something like this " Reboot and select the drivem press any key to continue"
I pressed any key and got the same as above everytime I pressed a key.

I then unplugged it and plugged it back in and when it booted a blue and yellow box came up with my drives but it only had one of the HD listed, I rebooted again with the hopes I could get to safe mode so I could use restore to go back a few days when the system was stable. when I selected safe mode the drivers started to list and then it stopped on mup.sys, everytime I tried safe mode the same thing happened.

If all I had to worry about was losing the data on that HD that won't boot I would try to reinstall Win XP Pro and do a fresh install, but the fact that this system has had trouble several times in the past and now recogizing the drive with the OS on it. Something has to be wrong and I don't feel it is the drive alone.

If it helps at all the blue screen of death said something at the end about memory XXXXXXXOOO with other numbers, when I press F* to get the safe mode option I tried all of the options and when I select either start windows normally or start with last good configuation I get the windows starting logo and then the blue screen of death flashes very quick, so quick I can't read it or pause it, then it goes to the
" Reboot and select the drivem press any key to continue" again and again

I sure hope someone can help me out I am using my old system and the new one is on my repair bench waiting for some good advice.

Thanks in advance to everyone who tries to help but

PLEASE don't experiment on my system, only offer help if you have dealt with it and know what you are doing. I don't mean to sound like a jerk but I have had people experiment with my system before and it only screwed it up more.

Update:
I was going to try and copy some files from my restore in the repair console but when I try to creat a temp folder using md tmp I get access denied. It seems I can't access the hard drive whatsoever.. and that sucks

First of all thank you very much for the very detailed replies.

My problems started when I was going to build my system and use IDE drives I had already bought. I went on another forum and someone talked me into getting SATA HD's then of course a MB that supported them.
I didn't know anything about setting up SATA drives and one guy walked me thru the f6 setup and it wouldn't work for me.

There would be times that both drives wouldn't be seen by my MB and other times they would. when I got the BSoD I tried everything I could think of and nothing worked. So I tried to reinstall windows Xp Pro on my C drive ( the one that I couldn't access ) and it let me install windows and everything seems fine now but I'm sure I do not have the SATA setting right because I don't have a clue when it comes to SATA drives.

I would really appreciate it if you could help me set the drives up because it sounds like you really know what you are talking about. In case my hardware doesn't show up on my signature I'll list them in this post and hopefully I gave you enough to start to help me.
