i am currently using the 7.5 ATI catalyst drivers.

Here is the problem.

The card is advertised that the memory clock is at 1450 mhz and the core clock runs at 625 mhz.

but when i open up my control center, and go to the tab under ATI Overdrive. It is listed that the clock core speed is at 500mhz, and the memory is only at 594 mhz.

why is there such a big difference?

yes i have a 550 w psu.

An ati customer service rep told me that in game or when the gpu is under stress, it goes to the core speed of 621 mhz, and 720 mhz for the mem. but when it idles it is at 500mhz/594 mhz . core speed and ram speed respectively.

is this true?

Correct. Its the difference between 2D and 3D clocks. If your sitting in windows surfing the net, why should the video card be working as hard as it can, consuming as much power as it can, and emitting as much heat as it can? By clocking the card down when its in 2D mode, you don't consume as much power, and more importantly, don't emit as much heat.

Yup Exactally right most newer video cards have 2D and 3D modes!

As 4745454b stated, there are 2D and 3D modes, I have mine OC'ed ever so slightly in the ATI Overdrive area to what you see in the sig, and if you look at my clocks under Cat. 7.5 you would see exactly the same thing on mine. 500/594, dont worry as the clocks will go back up to there rated speeds in games. If you want to test this as I did a year and a half ago when I bought this card then get into a game that u can alt+tab out of quickly and run it for a minute or so. Make sure to have your Cat 7.5 open and showing the unlocked ATI Overdrive part of the menu. Right when you alt-tab out of the game look straight at your clocks and notice that they are right where they should be. You will only have a second or 2, to view them before they go to 2D mode because u went onto your desltop, but when you go back into the game they will jump right back up instantly. Hope this helps!

if you mention power supplies once more i am going to kill you. seriously, change the record. PSU's are not the answer to everything, you do not neeed a million watts of power for most systems.

seriously, the fact that YOU after all your time here and this question being asked a million times do not know the answer is ridiculous.

JUST STFU.

oh and to the OP, do a god damn search. thsi question ahs been asked seemingly once a month if not more since this power saving feature was implemented.
