Windows mail

I have just upgraded to windows 7 and it says I can import my contacts and old mail into a windows live mail program where is it that this old mail and contacts reside. When I try to import my contacts it says that it is to large and I should open it and remove some of it. I am not a techno person so any help in laymans language would be most helpful.
