What happened to msdos sys and io sys

what happened to msdos.sys and io.sys?

I'm using Vista Home Premium and I wanted to make a USB SD card bootable. So when I went to my primary hard drive's root directory, nothing there (well besides the usual suspects).
Of course I have gone to my folder options under the 'view' tab and changed the show hidden files and deselected the 2 'Hide' extensions and protected boxes.

What gives?

I got those back with "bartpe"...

You could try Ultimate boot cd.
I think it can be used on a thumbdrive as well.
Your computer must support alternate boot devices.
