Slow responding recycle bin

When I open the recycle bin it takes 1 to 2 minutes befor it opens to show me the contents. also some times it takes a long time to empty.
Please Help.

Does it take just as long with a tiny file as it does with a lot of large files?

Mostly with large files, but also with small files.

Xps 420 Desktop
Core 2 quad 2.9 GHz, 3 gig ram
Windows Vista Ultimate 32Bit service pack 2, all updates current

Open the task manager and click on the performance tab. Keep an eye on that as you open the recycle bin. Watch to see if the CPU or RAM usage spikes.
