My computer icons and background turn black when booting up - is this a virus?

my computer icons and screen flash to black - then come on, it took me 8 times to get all of the programs to start up correctly, first my firewall wouldn't start and my keyboard, then mouse wouldn't work....is this a virus?

Do you have the same problem in safe mode?
