1. I whipped my hard drive clean and my product key will not work on my xp upgrade. I need to get a new key from Microsoft. I have absolutely no intention of buying another one.
2. Unless you purchased a single use disc, then you should be able to upload the software on THREE different pcs, if you are trying to loan af FOURTH pc then you must purchase a new license.
3. I would double check some info on this site, some of the answers are simply wrong.
1. if you whipped(wiping the drive may have been the intention, flogging never worked with a HDD) the HDD clean, the upgrade will not work, yes, that's correct, you need a full installation, 2. if it was a 3 time license, I still don't think you can upgrade from no OS to XP, 3. check complete
If i remember you can install a upgrade disk as a full install.
This is for vista but it works basically the same way.

Do you have an upgrade disc? That's the part you neglected to mention. An upgrade key will work just fine if you're using upgrade media to install. The only thing is that you will need is a copy of a previous version of Windows.
