Need more volume from WP

Anyone know how to get more volume from all sounds in XP. I don't hear well and everything is difficult for me. I've already maxed out every control that's readily available. I don't know why they make this so difficult. Volume should have a control range that is sufficient to be too loud for anyone. How else do you know you've accommodated all preferences? I've also checked "accesibility options" but there's no help there. By the way, I'm already using headphones.
