Hi, I just got a new pc (Intel 6420 dual core processor) with 8600gt graphics card, but from what I've read it appears that my old 7800gtx might outperform it (I know it's not direct x 10 compatible). It certainly seems to be the case with 7900 series but I was wondering if anyone had experienced similar with 7800. I would appreciate any advice. Cheers. Jack Frost.
Since the 7800 GTX is pretty old, it doesn't appear on a lot of benchmarks along with the 8600 GT. However, the 7800GTX is the same GPU as a 7900GT (it is made on a different manufacturing process, but I'm talking about performance) so you could try to find some benchmarks that compare a 7900 GT (not GTX) to that 8600 GT you've "upgraded" to.
Here are some benchmarks, but unfortunately they don't show a 7800 GTX or a 7900 GT... however, a 7900 GS is included... just imagine your GTX with 4 of its 24 pipes clipped.
Don't H8 M8, but the 7800GTX will outperform the 8600GT. Looks like the 8600GT is slightly better than the 7600GT in most of the anandtech benches. Compare the 7800GTX to the 7600GT here:

a simple way to compare the two, not very accurate but still it'll give you a very good idea, is to check out their 3dmark 2005 scores... seriously you can't compare the 8600 gt to 7800 GTX, it's not in the same ballpark
