Folder names missing in My Pictures

All the folder and file names in My Pictures Folder have disappeared(XP Home).
If I hover over the folder/file the name of it shows in a box with a white background.
When the item is selected then right clicked and rename is clicked the name shows as normal
below but with a blue background (as if a rename is wanted) if this box is cleared and the
original name is retyped the box disappears when done and clicking outside the box.
All the images are jpegs.
When I want to “Save as” to import an image into My Pics all the folder/files names show
as normal when browsing for the destination folder.
Can you advise please
