My Phillips HDTV set 30PW862H has Uneven Sound and is much louder on
commercials than the regular program broadcast. I have AVL turned on
but that doesn't seem to make any difference. Are there any service
code adjustments I can make in this area ??

I don't believe there's any adjustment there you could make.
What kind of programs/provider are they?

In my experience it seems that it is the broadcast that cranks up the volume
during commercials, no fault of the receiver.
I use the mute button.

It isn't just some louder, it's a lot louder. We have to change to the
volume from say 32 to 26. Is the AVL adjustable in the service code
setups ?

I just purchased a Philips 30PF9946D/37.
I find that changing from a station that broadcasts in mono to one
in stereo makes a big change in the volume.
I can use the personal settings menu for audio and minimize this.

I use a DVR to blow past the commercials.
