I gave the ftp site the address 192.168.1.102 but the thing is thats the inside address... what ip address do i have to give somebody on the outside so they can access my ftp site and transfer files

Providing your site works fine from inside your network you need to configure your router to "Port Forward" all incoming ftp traffic to your ftp server 192.168.1.102 see your instruction manual for how to do that. To connect from the outside world you will have to provide your users with the IP address that your ISP provides you with. This address should be static. If not then your address will change regularly which will give your users big problems in finding you. Most ISPs will upgrade your service to provide you with a static address. Do be aware though that if you have a static IP address it is easier for a hacker to find you.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the reply......I do have it on port fowarding, i have everything set up the way it needs to be.. I just cant access it away from home. I dont have a static address from my isp, but can I use the default gateway address?? when i open the router utility for the router the ip address on it 10. address.. can I use ftp://10.xx.xx.xx to reach my ftp site?

Nope.... There will be many routers with that internal gateway address. It is accessible from within the LAN (Local Area Network) but no way to get there from the WAN.

Think of your (gateway) router like a street name.

From within a city suburb it is easy to find the street you want just by looking it up in the street directory.

But to find the street on a worldwide scale you need much more info than just the street. You need country, state, city, suburb.....

It would be impossible.

Your external (or public) IP address is unique to you. Kind of like your Longitude, Latitude coordinates for your address on google earth. This is what you need.

It is not hard to find though, there are many sites that will provide it for you:

http://www.google.com.au/search?hl [...] arch&meta=

I don't have a static external ip address, but it has remained the same for the last 2 years.

o i been throw this, and ima explain on how to do solve it

first you have to set your ip address manual for right click my network places --> go internet protocol---> properties

example

192.168.1.5 ip address
255.255.255.0 sub mask
192.168.1.1 default gatway

192.168.1.1 dns server

second i read in Verizon DSL they have firewall that prevents the outside traffic from connecting to the inside,

so open internet explorer in the URL section type 192.168.1.1
username : admin
password: admin

then go to the firewall section, and put no firewall, take it off completely, because it blocks the traffic, if you want protection you can have windows firewall on for security.

now whatever program or the thing that you want to accsess from outside your lan to the inside you have to do port forwording for exmaple VNC it uses port 5900 you will have to create 5900 start and end ports.

now your inside Lan ip address is 192.168.1.5 that if you wanna access your computer from inside your lan using another computer.

to Access your computer from outside the lan (for exmaple from your house to your store) you well have to use your Public ip address, to find out your public ip address go to www.whatismyip.com and it will show you your Public Ip Address thats the one that you need to connect from outside your lan.

or start--> run and type cmd

in the black section (witch is the command prompt) type ipconfig and it will show you your ip address.

hope that helps.
