Newbie question,

I have an Iwill ZPC64 micro-tower with an external PSU rated at 180 watts. I recently acquired a Radeon AIW9800PRO for the one expansion slot I have (4x/8x AGP). When I plug it in and connect the acc power, the PSU does not come on. I suspect too much power is being drawn from the little POS Achme external (I realize now what should have been obvious before buying ).

I think the DC in is a Mini Molex 12 pin (2x6), see link:
http://www.iwill-benelux.com/?mod= [...] duct_id=22

Has anyone modified a PSU by removing the 20 pin main board socket and put on a different Mini Molex plug? I have found some sources for the plug and will shop for a PSU later. For now I just want to verify if it can be done and is there any special order/standard (wire color) that has to be followed? I was going to test each pin with a voltmeter when I get a chance, hoping that all are 12V and likewise for the PSU's.

Apologies in advance for a very long and confusing problem description. I will try to clarify if need be.

Thanks,
lmac

This link shows every connector a PSU has or ever had as far as PCs go.

That's his problem exactly; it's not a "PC." His box is an entirely proprietary little unit with a non-standard external PSU. He may have to buy another connector that will fit it and rewire a "normal" PSU to feed it.

@OP, do you have wiring diagrams available showing all the pins on that non-standard connector? I downloaded the manual but it isn't in there.

I am almost certain it is a 12 pin mini-molex (square pin) female plug coming off the PSU. I have no idea whether it goes directly to the MOBU or is split up inside the case (afraid to look). It is basically what is used on a PCI-e (dual) 6 pin plug off some of the modular PSU's.

Here is what it looks like:

This SLI PSU looks promising but again the wire voltage spec issue creeps up:

Any words of advice appreciated. I can't possibly be the only person that has ever contemplated or attempted such a task. Kinda hoping to pick the brains of a few CE/EE guys about an obscure standard that I can research on my own.

The website is pretty much "what you see is what you get". I haven't contacted support but I am pretty sure that they would not help me goose up a PSU that they barely support. Request for a wiring diagram put in though.

Thanks again...

I apologize if this is NOT what you are thinking, but trying to stick two PCI-X power plugs together into your 12-pin molex will not work, and will likely create smoke, sparks, and maybe the odd bang or two. You may be able to cut off some of the connectors on a standard PSU in order to connect the proper wires into a 12-pin molex, but you'll need the pinout in order to do that. A number of different voltages are likely involved in addition to +12V, including +5V, +3.3V, probably -12V, and maybe -5V.

Thanks

My intension was to wire with the correct socket which I have found:
http://www.molex.com/cgi-bin/bv/mo [...] Lang=en-US

I just was hoping this was an obscure standard that I might be able reference. Still need to test PSU output but that'll have to wait till I get a fuse for my mulit-meter...

Lotta reads and few posts, anybody?

Thanks,
lmac
