My hard drive is always making noise, even when idle. Its more just little periodical/burst noises. Not sure if it shold be doing htis or not. Doesnt appaear to be doing anything to performance at all though.

Depends on the noise.

The bearing may be warn out.
The other possibilities lead to data loss (such as the head scraping along).

It also could be a virus accessing your drive. Scan for viruses and spyware.

If it is the former, you need to back up your data. A failure in drive mechanics is the worst kind of failure and usually you can not get any data back. (unless you spend $$$).

Try putting the drive in the freezer over night. If there is an issue that is not related to wear and tear, but mechanics, the expansive properties of the drive may correct the issue.
